If you live in Pennsylvania, and your utility company is PPL, consider yourself lucky. The utility Company PPL got deregulated in January 2010. What this means for you as the consumer, is that you no longer have to pay the cost for the unreasonably high prices charged by PPL. PPL raised their prices 30% at the beginning of this year because of the deregulation cost. This deregulation process also allows you to not have to pay a 30% hike.

What deregulation is quickly. Prior to this year, the cost of your kilowatts was capped and controlled by the government. Because the utility company had a monopoly there was no competition in the market to drive the prices down. Now that the deregulation of electricity happened, the generation side and the distribution side of the company got separated. It will still be PPL that brings the electricity to your house but now you now have the choice to choose where your electricity comes from, the generation of it.

PPL raised their prices 30% because they are trying to get away from the generation of electricity. They would only like to distribute the electricity to you and that’s it. Now that you have the option of where your electricity comes from. You can guarantee yourself a lower rate. It’s nice to make efforts to save electricity, by turning off the lights when you leave a room, by upgrading the insulation in your house, or by just being a little frugal with your heat consumption. But in my opinion it would actually be more effective to get down to the source and lower the actual cost of your kilowatts.

There are many programs and companies for you to choose from. I recommend you do your due diligence and find a rate that suits you. There are some companies that have higher rates but have fixed the plan. There are some companies that have lower rates, but a variable plan. There are some companies that offer you benefits, such as a reward programs. And then there are companies that offer you lower rates, as well as reward programs.
